Mayfield, Graves County alum suit up one more time
When former football players hang up the pads after high school, often times it’s for good. But that all changed for alumni of Graves County and Mayfield Saturday night. Some guys who haven’t suited up in decades, hit the field for one final game.
The ‘Battle of the Birds’ was put on by the group Alumni Football USA, who for the last 30 years have been giving former football players the chance to suit up one last time.
Before Saturday’s match-up at War Memorial Stadium 2,700 tickets were sold, and event organizer Jarrod Hargrave expected close to five-thousand fans there to witness the game. Both Graves County and Mayfield were given checks for $9,000 which was raised, that will go back to the athletic departments of each school.
Hargrave says of all the years he’s done this, the ‘Battle of the Birds’ is one of the best turnouts he’s witnessed.
“You could not ask for a better community, a better group of guys, they’ve rallied,” said Hargrave. “The schools have gotten behind them, this is as good as it gets. It’s just great people from start to finish, it’s been a pleasure and a blessing to work with this community.”
Hargrave says other schools like Paducah Tilghman, Marshall County, and Murray have all shown interest in playing in an alumni game as well.
