Miners hope to make run at Frontier League title

The Southern Illinois Miners won their first Frontier League championship back in 2012.  Last year, despite having a winning record, the Miners missed the playoffs. Heading into 2014, that Frontier League title has to feel like it happened forever ago to many in the Miners’ organization — especially since there are no players remaining from that championship team.

Thursday, the Miners got back to work as 39 players took part in Spring Training activities. With only seven players back from last year’s team, manager Mike Pinto says he has his hands full trying to get his roster down to the limit of 24 players before opening day.  Pinto says it will be harder than ever to cut guys because he believes he has more talent on the field than ever before.

The Miners will play their exhibition opener at home on May 6th at 10:00am at Rent One Park. On May 10th, the Miners will make their annual trip to Paducah to play an exhibition game at Brooks Stadium.  The regular season begins on May 16th.  The Miners home opener is May 20th against Schaumburg.
