McCracken County’s McKamey wins state tennis championship

McCracken County’s tennis team is bringing back hardware from the state tournament in Lexington, led by Michelle McKamey, who took down Highland’s Meredith Laskey for the singles division championship.

At one point, McKamey trailed 4-3 in the first match against Laskey, but she won three consecutive games and took the first match 6-4, followed by a 6-1 victory in the second match.

In girl’s doubles action, McCracken’s Makenna Garneau and Madelyn Kauffman took down the team of Stearman and Zelichenok from Manual, 7-6 and 6-3 in the semifinals. But Garneau and Kauffman fell in the championship round to Maci Ferguson and Kierstin Hensley of Russell, 6-3 and 6-3.

In the boy’s doubles division, McCracken County’s Grant Hammons and Mat Townsen lost 6-0, 7-6 to Coleman Cox and Nick Quinones of St. Xavier in the semifinals.

The KHSAA named McKamey, Garneau, Kauffman, Hammons, and Townsen to the state’s all-tournament team.
