Deer vs. Car

During deer season our cars can take a beating.

Last year, there were more than 13,000 deer-related car accidents in Illinois.

At Dave’s Collision Center there are four cars in for repairs after striking a deer.

One of the vehicles is a total loss.

Shop manager Joe Eberhardt says for every ten cars that come into the shop, two of them have hit a deer.

“Usually about August, mid-August when the weather starts to get a little cooler,” said Eberhardt.

He says since then, he and his crew have seen more than 30 vehicles banged up because of deer.

While deer season makes for a busy shop, Eberhardt says he would trade the business for safer roadways.

A local Sheriff’s Deputy tells Local 6 that the deer are out in greater numbers because it is mating season and hunting season.

He says we need to keep our eyes peeled, especially at twilight, and slow down if we see deer.
