Illinois marks anniversary of deadly tornadoes

Residents of central and southern Illinois and elected officials are marking the one-year anniversary of deadly tornadoes that left more than a half a dozen people dead and destroyed numerous buildings.

Brookport Mayor John Klaffer remembers November 17th, 2013 like it was yesterday.

“We’ve come a long way since the tornado this time last year, we’ve got a long way to go,” said Klaffer.

On Monday, bells sounded in honor of the three victims of the tornado. The town is rebuilding, with only their memories.

A memorial bench was unveiled in front of Brookport City Hall. It has the names of the victims engraved on the seat and the date.

“We’re going to be stronger tomorrow than ever before,” said Governor Pat Quinn, (D) Illinois.

Governor Pat Quinn also made a stop in the central Illinois community of Washington. The city was one of the hardest hit by tornadoes.
