Cooking safety tips
Thanksgiving is just two days away and many people will be cooking up big meals for their families, but that also means an increase in cooking fires.
If you are planning on cooking, Kentucky’s State Fire Marshall has some cooking safety tips you should follow.
- Be on alert. Don’t cook when you are sleepy or have consumed alcohol.
- Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling, or broiling food.
- If you are simmering, baking, roasting, or boiling food, check it regularly and use a timer to remind you that you are cooking.
- Keep anything that can catch fire – oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels, or curtains – away from your stovetop.
If you do have a cooking fire:
- Keep a lid near where you’re cooking to smother small grease fires. Never throw water onto a grease fire.
- For an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed.
- When in doubt, get out. Call 911 after you leave.
