Second pier of Old Ledbetter Bridge finally down
It took five days, but the second pier of the Old Ledbetter Bridge has been toppled.
On Wednesday afternoon around 3:00 p.m., the demolition crew was finally able to pull the concrete pier over.
The crew had been working since last week to bring the pier down. The effort included taking off large chunks of concrete near the base of the pier to make the structure weaker.
Now that the top of the piers’ are gone, the next step is to remove the bases that are underwater.
The demolition crew will drill into the piers and prepare them for explosives. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says they are hoping to blast the pier bases Friday afternoon.
After the detonation, the demolition crew will use a crane to pull the remaining chunks of the pier from the river bottom.
