Cape Girardeau man and 18-month-old child die in fatal crash

A Cape Girardeau man and an 18-month-old boy both died after being involved in a fatal crash Thursday afternoon.

According to Illinois State Police, 43-year-old Lenzie Johnson of Cape Girardeau, Missouri and his passenger, an 18-month-old boy, were traveling west on IL 146 near Locust Grove Road  in Union County just before 1:00 p.m.

For unknown reasons on a hill crest, Johnson crossed into the other lane of traffic. A 66-year-old woman driving westbound on the road tried to avoid the crash, but was hit head on by Johnson’s car.

Johnson was taken to Union County hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The 18-month-old boy was flown to a St. Louis hospital with life threatening injuries. The child passed away on Friday.

The 66-year-old woman was taken to a Cape Girardeau hospital with non life threatening injuries.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
