Woman arrested and charged with scamming local churches

A Mayfield woman was arrested and charged for allegedly scamming area churches out of money.

According to the Graves County Sheriff’s Office, 36-year-old Dawn Riley had been asking churches for money to help her with a sick child. She claimed her son was going blind and was sent to Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee. Riley would tell the churches she will use the money to get there to be with him and for food while she is there.

The sheriff’s office was made aware of the scam when churches call the school system asking about the child’s health. The school system then called to inform the sheriff’s office about the calls.

Deputies began to investigate and found that the child in question was in good health and that he had never been to Vanderbilt. They also discovered that one church sympathetic to Riley’s story gave money to the woman at least three times.

Riley was arrested and charged with Theft by Deception under $10,000. She is lodged in the Graves County Jail.

Dawn Riley’s husband, Randy Riley, is also believed to have been to local churches and involved in the scam. Riley may have also used the same type of story to get money from Calloway County churches.

Anyone who knows that Riley is coming to their church is asked to call the Graves County Sheriff’s Office at (270) 247-4501.
