Schools collect thousands of pounds of food
Paducah Power picked up thousands of pounds of food from schools across McCracken County on Thursday.
The Christmas In The Park School Challenge Food Drive is officially over. Now, it’s time to weigh the food and pick the winners. While the competition was fierce this year, there’s an important lesson the local students who took part are taking from the experience.
“We’re just so proud of what they’ve done,” Paducah Power’s Andrea Underwood said.
“I’m really surprised,” Concord Elementary 4th grader Emma Henderson told Local 6 about the amount of food her school raised.
“We’re almost overflowing with all these cans,” 5th grader Nick Masek added. “So, we had to push them in the corner.”
It’s not a bad problem to have.
Thursday, Paducah Power stopped at all 13 schools that took part in their Christmas In The Park School Challenge food drive to pick up all the food students donated. It’s a heavy job, but one that Underwood says is worth the extra muscle.
“At the end of the day, we will have enough canned goods just from the school challenge to fill a semi,” Underwood said.
The food raised by these little ones accounts for a big chunk of this drive: one third of the total donated.
How long will all that food last for local pantries?
“Well into the first three to six months of the new year,” Underwood said.
The kids are a little competitive. We wanted to know, which grade level stepped up the most at Concord Elementary?
“Fifth grade,” Nick said with no hesitation.
“Probably fourth,” Emma replied.
They may be a bit biased.
In the end, though, they’re all winners for helping others.
“It just feels pretty good,” Nick said. “All these kids in need, they’re gonna’ have plenty of food.”
“I hope this helps you, and you have a good holiday,” Emma said.
