Two dead after boating incident at Rend Lake

A 63-year-old man and a 13-year-old boy died after a boating incident in Rend Lake Monday afternoon.

According to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department, Terry Calvert of New Baden and his two grandchildren, ages 13 and 11 of Collinsville, were fishing in the Gun Creek area of Rend Lake when the 13-year-old fell into the water.

After trying to get the boy out of the water, Calvert jumped into the lake but fell victim to the cold water.

The 11-year-old was able to get help from other fishermen in the area and Calvert was pulled into the boat. The 13-year-old was not found.

Calvert was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

About an hour and a half later, a Search and Rescue diver found the 13-year-old. He was unresponsive and taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Funeral arrangements are pending in the Collinsville area.
