University to pay for furlough days

A labor dispute between Southern Illinois University in Carbondale and several employee unions is over.

The university announced on Thursday that it will comply with an order by the Illinois Educator Labor Relations Board to repay members of three bargaining groups who were forced to take furlough days in 2011.

“We’re looking at over 1,400 employees who we’ll be making some sort of payment to so that will take a bit of time to do the calculations, find the individuals, and actually make those payments,” said President Randy Dunn.

The school had until Thursday to appeal the board’s decision.
