Police chief arrested for allegedly brandishing handgun while intoxicated
A police chief has been arrested for allegedly brandishing a gun while intoxicated at two Orient, Illinois businesses.
Sheriff Don Jones of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office says 39-year-old Orient Police Chief Joseph (Joe) Brown of Herrin has tentatively been charged with intimidation and official misconduct.
Sheriff Jones says deputies were called to the Phillip Whiteside American Legion Post 1961 just before 10:30 p.m. Saturday night.
Club employees and patrons told deputies that Brown had come to the club intoxicated, made threats, and brandished a handgun. Brown had already left the club by the time deputies arrived.
Deputies later talked to the employees of Elsie’s Tavern who told them Brown had done the same thing to them earlier in the evening.
Brown was arrested Monday at the Sheriff’s Office.
An investigation is ongoing.
