Family seeking answers in woman’s fatal fall at nursing home

Family members are seeking answers in the death of an 85-year-old Belleville nursing home patient who was found at the bottom of stairs still strapped in her wheelchair.
The granddaughter of Juanita Simmons tells the Belleville News Democrat ( ) that her family wants to know why Midwest Respiratory and Rehabilitation Center did not call police and how Simmons got through the doorway to the stairs.
The St. Clair County coroner’s office says it learned about Simmons’ death from the funeral home.
Officials from the nursing home and Integrity Communities, which operates it, declined to comment to the newspaper about how the death was handled.
Coroner Rick Stone says Simmons’ death is being investigated as an accident, although an autopsy Friday did not immediately determine the cause of death.
