Dozens Of Animals Seized From Local Home
– Dogs, birds, chinchillas, rabbits and even ducks were discovered by McCracken County Animal Control Officers inside a home on Merrydale Drive in Reidland Wednesday evening.
The discovery came after an anonymous call about the homeowner likely being overwhelmed by what investigators describe as roughly 70 to 80 animals inside the home. Crews spent hours Wednesday retrieving the animals and finding safe places for them to spend the night.
During the retrieval process animal control officers dressed in boots and wore other protective gear because animal feces was spread throughout the home. The Local 6 photojournalist on the scene said the female homeowner appeared to be very helpful and cooperative with authorities. It’s not yet clear what legal action might take place involving the homeowner, other than a citation. The homeowner’s name is not being released and the case remains open.
McCracken County Animal Control Director Crystal George said it’s vital the animals are well cared for moving forward.
“These animals are still part of a court case. They are evidence so we do need to be able to still have our hands able to check on them regularly,” George said.
A post on the McCracken County Sheriff’s Department Facebook page said numerous volunteers helped in the effort Wednesday. Specific foster plans for the animals will be discussed Thursday at the animal shelter. In the meantime, people in the community are asked to donate food and drop it off at the shelter on Thursday.
