Ahead of AQS QuiltWeek, downtown business owners begin promoting themselves
Paducah’s downtown is pretty much Tom Dorroh’s second home.
“There are a lot people interested in downtown. We certainly are,” he said.
He manages Paducah’s Antique Mall at 4th and Broadway. Quilt Week is two weeks away, which means now is the time for him and others to start promoting their businesses.
“Quilt week is the biggest week of the year for Paducah’s downtown,” Dorroh told Local 6.
To spearhead that effort, Downtown Specialist Melinda Winchester is challenging business owners to showcase their storefronts. “Your storefront, as a business owner, is really your biggest marketing tool,” Winchester said.
Last year, AQS QuiltWeek brought in more than $25 million to western Kentucky and southern Illinois. To keep that momentum going after the event, Winchester plans to role out other promotions, like concerts and an art exhibition in the summer.
“The nice weather, the spring and the quilt show, really, it is our kickoff. And what a great way to kick off your great season, with 32,000 people coming into your downtown,” she said.
Down the road, Winchester would like to have a different promotion every month to offer locals the opportunity to keep coming back. Dorroh said downtown is becoming more family-friendly, and it’s driven by those who want to see it succeed.
“Everything is here if you just come and get it,” he said with a smile.
