What the Tech: Summer Vacations

The kids will be out of school soon, time for a vacation.

Wouldn’t it be great if it was that easy? But there are a couple of things that can make this summer’s vacation great even before you leave the house.

If you’d like to try something other than a hotel or condo, Airbnb is a place to start. It’s an online marketplace for rentals. Airbnb hosts advertise their homes on the website. These are regular people with regular houses, but you’ll also find some very unique rentals.

More than 600 castles are listed for rent. Airbnb says it also has listed over 2,000 tree houses and 400 lighthouses.

For ambitious travelers who want to take the trip of a lifetime cross-country, Roadtrippers should be your first stop. The website from the folks at TripIt maps out the journey, showing the best routes to take in historical sites, roadside attractions, and weird road wonders.

For instance, my road trip to the Hollywood sign. I can drag the quickest route through a city I want to visit, then add some of the things I’d like to see. I choose weird wonders, and find see-through public toilets in Sulpher Springs, Texas.

That is weird.

Apps for Android and Apple devices sync the trip plans to access while you’re headed down the highway. A couple of things that could save a Cark Griswald vacation. Better hurry though. Once the kids get out of school, summer goes by fast. They’ll be back in school like that.
