People Talking after Racial Taboo Premiere

The documentary Racial Taboo premiered today at the Maiden Alley Cinema. Local 6’s Blake Stevens was there for the first of 4 showings. After the 53 minute documentary, both white and black people gathered in groups to discuss the film and both sides of race.

The film’s director, Brian Grimm, says “it’s important for people to understand where each side is coming from.”

One of the group moderators, Bonnie Crim, says she felt anxiety at times throughout the discussion. There was a generational gap between some members and one even admitted to being prejudiced.

Local 6 also spoke with Anthony Ellison, who says it was a beautiful discussion where everybody could actually express their feelings whether they are racist or not. He added that the movie was inspirational for the community and that it can bring all races together by not looking at them as one color.

Grimm says we can all learn from each other. Throughout filming, he said it was “heartbreaking to learn that many of the prejudices that white people hold about black people… black people believe about themselves.”

The cultural barrier is broken and people are talking. You can catch Racial Taboo at the Maiden Alley Theater tomorrow at 4 p.m. and again at 7. The Race Unity group is asking for a $5 donation.

The group is also planning to continue the conversation over 6 weekly meetings:

The first three:

When: April 30, May 7, May 14 (6:00-7:30 PM)

Where: Washington Street Baptist Church, 721 Washington Street, Paducah

The next three: TBA

A one-day race reconciliation workshop will also be held on Saturday, May 9, from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the Paducah Recreation Center.
