Free document shredding in Jackson County, IL., Saturday


Jackson County, Illinois, residents can take part in a free, confidential document shredding and electronics recycling event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 18, at Egyptian Electric, according to Jackson County Health Department Recycling Coordinator Kerri Gale.

Shredding services will be provided by DataLock Document Management Services of Mt. Vernon, and folks can take documents like bank statements, medical and insurance forms, personal files, old tax forms, and receipts to shred. It’s OK if the documents have paper clips or staples, but binders and binder clips should be removed. 

E-recycling services will be provided through the Jackson County Electronics Recycling Program. Accepted items are computers, monitors, TVs, keyboards, computer mice, printers, canners, VCRs and DVD players, radios, stereos, phones, and similar items. 

Items not accepted are fluorescent tubes, incandescent bulbs, washing machines, dryers, water heaters, lamps, smoke detectors, freezers, stoves, humidifiers and dehumidifiers. Items from businesses, schools, governments, and other large sources won’t be accepted. 

The event will be held rain or shine, and assistance removing items from vehicles will be provided. Egyptian Electric is located at 10169 Old Highway 13 in Murphysboro.
