Kentucky Rep. Gerald Watkins appointed to national nuclear legislative work group

State Rep. Gerald Watkins has been appointed to the National Conference of State Legislatures’ Nuclear Legislative Work Group, Kentucky House Speaker Greg Stumbo’s office announced Thursday.

“Gerald is the House’s expert on any issue involving nuclear energy,” Stumbo said. “So appointing him to this committee was an easy one to make,”

Watkins, who represents Kentucky’s third district, said he’s honored to serve in the group.

“My hope is that this will help me expand the nuclear industry’s profile in our community and in other areas of the commonwealth,” Watkins said.

The Nuclear Legislative Work Group was formed in 1992 by the NCSL and is made up of legislators from select states involved in nuclear energy and nuclear waste management.

The group will hear federal updates from the U.S. Department of Energy, discuss the latest policy issues and share information on what’s going on within their respective states. NCSL covers costs associated with travel, lodging and food.
