Local bridge hit by barge

The US 51 Ohio River “Cairo” bridge was closed to traffic for a few hours Thursday morning after it was hit by a barge.

According to the U.S. Cost Guard, five empty barges were hit by a gust of wind and pushed into a pier of the bridge just after 10:00 a.m.

The crew reported what appeared to be a scrape on the pier and the bridge was closed to traffic.

An inspector found that there was no structural damage to the bridge.

The bridge was reopened to traffic at 11:45 a.m.

The US 51 Ohio River “Cairo” bridge connects Wickliffe, Kentucky with Cairo, Illinois.
