Coroner reports suspicious death preliminary autopsy results

A local coroner released the preliminary results of an autopsy in a Christopher, Illinois, death deemed suspicious by state police.

Illinois State Police announced the investigation into the death of 53 year-old Steven Berkley Sunday. The man was found unresponsive in his home on Egyptian Road around 5 a.m. that day.

Franklin County Coroner Marty Leffler reported Wednesday that preliminary autopsy results indicated “pulmonary edema and congestion due to clinical excited delirium.” He said illegal drugs are the suspected cause.

The final cause of death won’t be available until toxicology reports are completed, the coroner said. It may be more than six weeks before the final pathologist report is finished.
