Zack Pittman’s mom talks about his recovery and his plan for rehab

Laurie Pittman, Zack Pittman's mom, sat down with Local 6's Robert Bradfield to talk about her son's recovery after Zack was hit by a car on his way home from school in May.

She told Local 6 doctors were quick to count Zack out. "They didn't give him a good prognosis at all. They told me after 22 hours that I needed to call my family to say goodbye," Pittman recalled.

She made that phone call but asked for prayers instead. She said there have been a few setbacks, including Zack's long stint in a coma, but there have also been great strides. Laurie remembered the first time Zack opened his eyes. Doctors told her it would never happen.

"They told me he's not even going to open his eyes. He's never going to breathe on his own. He's going to be a vegetable," Pittman said.

Zack has now been breathing on his own for a month. He is connected to a feeding tube and has weak neck muscles, but doctors are working with him to regain his strength. Sunday was Zack's 12th birthday. "I told Zack 'This is a birthday you weren't supposed to have a little over a month ago,'" she said.

The woman who hit Zack called Laurie on the phone. She said she didn't even see him crossing the street. The impact knocked Zack out of his shoes.

Pittman told the woman, "I want you to know that I'm not mad at you. I'm really, really mad at the situation. No matter what happened to my son, I know you didn't do it on purpose."
