Land Between the Lakes project in Lyon County canceled

Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area has canceled the Pisgah Bay project as it was originally proposed, the U.S. Forest Service announced Tuesday.

The project, which originally called for logging and prescribed burning to improve forest health, revolved around the Pisgah Bay area in Lyon County.

“This move is all about our desire to work with members of the public on the future of our National Recreation Area,” said Tina Tilley, Area Supervisor for the Forest Service unit, in Tuesday's announcement. “We plan to spend time collaborating with our communities on how better to meet our mission."

The Forest Service said it will likely consider moving forward on smaller, more defined projects in the area after collaborating with the public. Some of the projects being considered are:

  • Replacing culverts while improving conditions on approximately 31.7 miles of Forest Service roads.
  • Rerouting of approximately 2.7 miles of the North/South Trail to stop degradation of the landscape.
  • Incorporating road access to a backcountry campsite area.
