Bridge closed after hit by barge
PADUCAH, KY —
UPDATE: The McCracken County Sheriff's Department says the bridge has been reopened to traffic.
UPDATE: KYTC spokesman Keith Todd says the U.S. Coast Guard reports a tow hit the Brookport bridge at Paducah at 5:10 p.m.
The Coast Guard says the Motor Vessel Dan Elder was pushing 15 empty hopper barges when the wind pushed the tow into the right descending pier of the river channel span of the bridge. The collision put a 4 inch dent in the starboard bow of the second from the lead barge in the tow. The barge pulled to the shoreline on the Illinois side to further assess the damage.
Kentucky Transportation Cabinet bridge inspectors are on the way to the bridge, which is closed to traffic until they can run a safety check on the structure.
The estimated closure duration is two hours.
The Brookport bridge is closed Friday evening because a barge reportedly hit it.
Kentucky Transportation Cabinet spokesman Keith Todd says the bridge is closed to allow a safety inspection, which is expected to take an hour or two to complete.
The U.S. 45 Ohio River “Brookport” Bridge is between Paducah and Brookport and Illinois. Todd says the transportation cabinet hopes to have additional information from the Coast Guard soon. We will update this story if more information becomes available.
