Girl shot in neck on I-55

An 11 year-old girl had to undergo surgery Sunday after being shot in the neck.

Pemiscot County Sheriff Tommy Greenwell tells Local 6 the girl's family was driving south on I-55 when their driver's door window blew out. Greenwell says the family first thought it was the heat, however the 11 year-old, who was in the back seat, began complaining of neck pain.  It was determined she had been shot with a 9mm pistol.

Deputies were later contacted by a man who was shooting his pistol Saturday afternoon about the same time the 11 year-old was shot. Greenwell says in talking with the man, if any shots were fired and missed the berm, it would be in line with I-55.

Two pistols were given to deputies for ballistic testing.  At this time, Greenwell believes it was an accident and no one else is in danger.

The girl was released from the hospital and her family continued on their vacation.
