I Am Local 6: Debbie Moss Teaching Kindergarten for 40 Years
If you went to McNabb Elementary in Paducah or Community Christian Academy in McCracken County, you may know Debbie Moss. For more than four decades, she's been starting the little ones off to a successful school career.
There's a lot to learn the first week of kindergarten.
"We learn how to line up in the hall, where we're going to go, walk on the right side, where is your basket and where do you hand your basket. All procedures, procedures, procedures," said Moss.
Debbie Moss is the kindergarten teacher at Community Christian Academy outside of Paducah. Singing, dancing and storytelling have been a part of Moss's lesson plan for hundreds of 5 year olds.
"We have so much fun. They still have imaginations, and they still have curiosity," said Moss.
Moss has been teaching kindergarten for more than 40 years. She was the first kindergarten teacher in Paducah City Schools.
"I had 25 children in the morning and 25 children in the afternoon. I was the only kindergarten teacher," said Moss.
Since the early 1970s, Moss has taught kindergarten. And her students do return to her in some form or fashion.
"It's so rewarding to have taught children of children that I've had in kindergarten," said Moss.
Her philosophy hasn't changed over the years, even though her students do.
"The first job is to love them, and then the second job I have is to teach them," said Moss.
She doesn't consider her job, work. She says it's a blessing.
"I've taught a long time. I've been blessed to do it, but I'm no better than many and most teachers. Teachers are here because they love children," said Moss.
Moss hopes her students love her back.
