One injured after semi hits parked escort vehicle on Purchase Parkway

One person was sent to the hospital Monday after a semi hit an escort vehicle.

The Graves County Sheriff’s Office says the crash happened just before 1:30 p.m. on the Purchase Parkway just south of the 16 mile marker.

A semi with a wide load was parked on the shoulder with an escort vehicle about 50 feet behind it.

The driver of the escort vehicle, Jerry Smith of New York, saw a semi coming from behind.

Smith got out of the vehicle and began waving a flag in an attempt to warn the semi driver of the stopped traffic.

He then had to jump out of the way as the semi hit the escort vehicle.

The semi continued across traffic and crashed into an earth embankment.

The driver of the semi, Geoffrey Galloway of Calvert City, was taken to Jackson Purchase Medical Center for his injuries.

Both sides of the parkway were shut down for about three hours due to the wreck.
