State police investigating death of Graves County inmate

The death of an inmate from the Graves County Jail is under investigation, according to the Kentucky State Police.

KSP says it received a 911 call from the jail reporting an unresponsive inmate around 11:57 a.m. Saturday. Mayfield EMS took 51-year-old Anthony R. Swatzell to Jackson Purchase Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead by the Graves County coroner.

State police say the cell Swatzell was in when he died was under video surveillance. KSP says an initial investigation indicates Swatzell died of natural causes. An autopsy was completed on Sunday in Louisville, and the results are pending.

KSP Detective John Sims is investigating the death.
