Fire chief announces retirement, city names interim chief
The city of Carbondale, Illinois, announced Friday that Fire Chief John Michalesko says he’s retiring effective Sept. 11 of this year.
"It has been an honor and privilege to serve the citizens of Carbondale from the beginning, as a fire fighter up through the ranks to that of fire chief," Michalesko said in the announcement.
City Manager Kevin Baity named Assistant Fire Chief Steve McBride to serve as interim fire chief. The city said McBride will continue his current command staff duties and fill the role of interim fire chief until the vacancy can be permanently filled.
The city said the new chief will be promoted from within, and two qualified assistant fire chiefs have said they want to seek the position: assistant chiefs Ted Lomax and Doug Biggs, who have more than 50 combined years of firefighting experience between them, as well as 24 years of command staff experience.
