I Am Local 6: Hendron Fire Department hosts alumni event

A local volunteer fire department call all members, past and present, to return to the station.

The Hendron Fire Department in McCracken County was established in 1961. They were in a small building with one fire truck and one army truck, used for backup. The station has changed, but the feeling of brotherhood has not.

The alarm can sound at any time. For more than 50 years, the Hendron Fire Department has been protecting their community.

"It’s neighbor helping neighbor. It’s people that care about their neighbor and want to help," said Don Peck.

Peck is an alumnus of the HFD. He dedicated 34 years of his life to the department and watched it grow.

"I look and see these guys, what they’ve done, and that makes me happy. It makes me feel that I’m still a part of it," said Peck.

Capt. Chris Peeler has been a part of the department for 19 years.

"It’s a group of guys that want to be together, train together, work together and know each other better than themselves," said Peeler.

There are 36 active members in the Hendron Fire Department who are all volunteers, but when the alarm goes off in the middle of the night, they answer the call for help.

"It could be 12-midnight, 2, 3 o’clock in the morning when the tones go off. You leave your family and come with your second family to go take care of whatever the problem is," said Chief Doug Cooper.

Cooper and Peeler hope to bring together a family that’s been growing since 1961 with their alumni event on Saturday. Members both past and present will be able to share stories or extinguish some tall tales.

"There are stories, just like anywhere, that float around. We’ll be able to put a face to the story. That guy can tell his story or the true story. We may get the truth finally," said Peeler.

Sharing stories like brothers, as they risk their lives to save families every day.
