Victim in fatal shooting in Cape Girardeau identified

The victim of a fatal shooting in Cape Girardeau that happened Tuesday night has been identified, according to the Cape Girardeau/Bollinger County Major Case Squad.

The victim, whose body was found by police around 9:43 p.m. Tuesday at 911 Ranney Ave., has been identified as 42-year-old Howard Harris Smith Jr. of Cape Girardeau. 

The major case squad said an autopsy performed Wednesday confirmed Smith died as a result of a gunshot wound. The investigation is ongoing.
