A day in the life of an ER nurse

Sick, tired, or maybe even hurt? We have all been to the emergency room before. Usually it is a hectic time because you come looking for relief, but how often do you take the time to look around at the doctors and nurses that make you feel better?

Today we salute those healthcare providers on Emergency Nurses Appreciation Day and thank them for putting in those long, sometimes very stressful hours.

The emergency department at Lourdes Hospital is a busy place.

"It’s a very exciting, fast paced environment and you get to help everyone, whether it’s an eight month old baby to the older patients," said RN Britany Walters.

It takes a special kind of person to work in the ER.

"You have to be prepared for anything that comes through the door. It is hard seeing people come in, the really sick ones its one of the worst days of the life when they come to the ER.," said Walters.

Walters chose this career for a reason.

"I’ve always loved helping people, I think that nursing is a calling that comes from compassion and you have to love the anatomy and physiology part of it as well," said Walters.

Big demands and long hours, but it is all worth it at the end of the day.
