Cat credited with saving sleeping residents from flames

A Chattanooga woman says her cat helped save four people from a fire that engulfed their home.

Local media outlets report that the woman told authorities that everyone in the house was sleeping Sunday morning when her cat began to meow and lick her face. The woman woke up to find the house on fire. The woman and three men inside were able to escape from the flames, which firefighters said turned the rental home into a total loss.

One of the men was hospitalized for smoke inhalation after he ran back into the house to search unsuccessfully for the cat.

Chattanooga Fire Chief Don Bowman said the cat may have run out of the house and into nearby woods.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
