Mom, 3 kids, neighbor killed in apartment fire in Kentucky

The fire chief in a northern Kentucky town says a woman, three of her children and a neighbor were killed in a fire at a set of apartment buildings.

Maysville Fire Chief Kevin Doyle didn’t give names or ages of those killed in the blaze Tuesday. But a neighbor who was awakened as flames spread says the woman went back inside to try to save her kids.

The neighbor, 61-year-old Ruth Austen, says the father tried to go back inside, too, but authorities stopped him.

Doyle didn’t confirm whether the woman went back inside but says "the father was in and out of the building several times."

Doyle says the father and two other children escaped. Doyle says the home didn’t have working smoke detectors.

The fire gutted three brick buildings, built in 1840. Two others were damaged.

Officials say the cause isn’t known.
