Sheriff: IRS phone scam targeting Mississippi County, Mo., residents

Mississippi County, Missouri, Sheriff Keith Moore is warning folks about an IRS phone scam he says is targeting bootheel residents.

The scammers, the Mississippi County Sheriff’s Office says, are calling people and claiming they owe tax debts or legal expenses from a class action lawsuit. The scammers threaten arrest or other legal action unless the person receiving the call agrees to wire money or make a credit card payment over the phone.

The sheriff’s department wants to remind folks that the Internal Revenue Service will never request immediate payment or ask for credit or debit card information over the phone. The IRS will contact you by U.S. mail if you owe taxes. If you think you owe taxes, you can contact the IRS directly by calling 800-829-1049.

If you receive a call like this, the sheriff’s department says you should simply hang up.
