Kentucky police shooting suspect arrested

Police have charged a 34-year-old man with attempted murder for allegedly shooting at a Kentucky police officer who was searching a Richmond apartment complex for a robbery suspect.

Raleigh Sizemore was charged with attempted murder of a police officer and first-degree unlawful imprisonment.

Kentucky State Police investigators say 33-year-old Richmond Police Officer Daniel Ellis was searching for a robbery suspect Wednesday morning. He and another officer went to an apartment, where police say Sizemore opened fire on Ellis, who was severely wounded and remains hospitalized.

The second officer returned fire and struck Sizemore. He was treated at the hospital and released to police custody.

Sizemore was booked Wednesday afternoon. Police say he was charged with unlawful imprisonment because he allegedly held someone captive inside the apartment, though police did not provide additional details.

Several hundred people have gathered outside a Kentucky police station for a vigil to support Ellis.

Richmond Police Major Steve Gregg described Ellis as "always in a good mood, always had a smile on his face."

Gregg said he was in line to be promoted to detective next month.

Residents flocked to the station and dropped plates of food and flowers at the door.

Richmond Mayor Jim Barnes said the community was in disbelief that this could happen in a small, quiet town of 32,000 people.
