New technology used to investigate deaths in Calloway County fire

A family of four was killed in a fire in Calloway County that started Tuesday night. Kentucky State Police are working to learn what caused the fire, but are calling the deaths suspicious.

Troopers say they found the bodies of 24-year-old Marisol Hernandez, 29-year-old Bulmaro Arellano, a 5-year-old boy and 18-month-old girl inside the home in the 1200  block of Kentucky 121.

KSP is using advanced technology, called a Leica System, to help figure out what happened. It gives investigators a 3D panoramic view of the crime scene.

Kentucky State Trooper Jay Thomas says this type of camera helps them reconstruct the scene and creates a digital footprint of the actual event. It can take as long as 12 hours to capture the entire crime scene using a Leica System.

Another part of the process to determine the causes of death will happen Thursday when autopsies on Hernandez, Arellano, and the two children are performed.

KSP says Hernandez had been shot, but did not release whether any of the other victims had gunshot wounds.

Edwina Key says you couldn’t ask for any friendlier people, and that they were good renters and neighbors. The couple recently married.

KSP says the couple has family living in Mexico, and state police are still working on getting in contact with them.

Anyone with information is asked to call Kentucky State Police at 270-856-3721.
