Eggners Ferry Bridge arch to be placed Tuesday

Engineers plan to move 5 million pounds of steel across the Kentucky Lake on Tuesday. They say it’s a move that takes the precision of a NASA shuttle launch.

"There’s a lot factors we have to keep in mind when we attempt a lift such as this," Project Engineer Michael Oliver says.

The move is scheduled to begin around 7 a.m. About an hour later, the span will be jacked into position between two piers.

"We will lift it 60 to 70 feet and get it to where it’s towering over the piers," Oliver says.

Then, it will take one to two more hours to maneuver it into place.

"The barges will take on water, and that will put arch in its correct orientation," he says.

Oliver says it’s a process that’s like watching paint dry, but well worth the wait. "It’s something that will help those people out and something western Kentucky can be proud of," he says.

Traffic on U.S. 68/KY 80 will be closed at 7 a.m. and stay closed for up to 24 hours. Boat traffic on Kentucky Lake and the Tennessee River will also be closed.

Kentucky Lake Campground, Cherokee Park, and Lake View Shelter will be open for people who want to watch the construction.

Engineers say they hope to have the bridge open to traffic in a few months and the entire project completed at the end of 2016. It all depends on weather.
