Couple faces animal cruelty charges after 14 dogs taken from home

Fourteen dogs and puppies are making strides in gaining strength and weight after McCracken County Animal Control Officer Chryss George turned them over to the McCracken County Humane Society.

"The McCracken County Humane Society is doing an excellent job and taking care of them," George said of their recuperation. In early November, George took the dogs from the home of Destiny Elder and Deantonio McGee. They were arrested and later bonded out. They were given a court date, but never showed.

"We would love to have them apprehended so that this case can come to a close," George told Local 6.

Court documents show Elder and McGee face 27 charges each for animal abuse. The charges range from malnourishment to lack of veterinary care. George said one dog was in such poor condition that he was able to touch its bare skull. "(There were) wounds — external wounds — and a lot of lacerations," she said.

Elder and McGee also face charges of animal cruelty. The investigation is still open and more charges could be filed, including if it’s determined the dogs were used in fighting. This is George’s third major animal cruelty case this year after serving search warrants in two previous cases.

"Every time I get in front of this camera, I always say it. People start off with a good heart and they really try, and it just goes awry. It’s when it goes awry that, unfortunately, we get involved, and I hate that," she said.

The dogs are not available for adoption because they are part of a court case.
