Illinois miner killed in accident, investigation underway

An investigation is underway after a Marion, Illinois man died in a mining accident.

The Franklin County Coroner says he was notified of a fatal accident at the M-class Mine located on North Thompsonville Road in Macedonia, Illinois around 9:00 p.m. Tuesday.

Around 11:30 p.m. the body of a miner was brought to the surface and pronounced dead by the coroner.

The miner is 20-year-old Tyler Rath of Marion, Illinois.

An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.

The accident is being investigated by the Mine Safety and Health Administration and the Illinois Department of Mines and Minerals.

Rath leaves behind a wife, a 2-year-old daughter, and a 6-day-old son.
