Fatal car wreck under investigation in Franklin County, Ill.

A 75-year-old southern Illinois man died in a car wreck Monday, according to the Franklin County Coroner’s Office.

Franklin County Coroner Marty Leffler said Monday that it appears the car was headed south on Jefferson Street in Valier, Illinois — just north of Izaac Walton Road — when it left the road and went up an embankment. It traveled through an electric fence in a cow pasture and hit a tree.

Leffler said he pronounced the driver, whose name isn’t being released yet, dead at the scene of the wreck at 10:35 a.m. Monday. The coroner said it looks like the driver may have experienced a medical issue that caused him to leave the roadway. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the wreck. Leffler noted this is the 18th motor vehicle death in Franklin County this year.
