Carlisle County Schools gets a good cleaning after stomach bug outbreak

An outbreak of a stomach bug sent students in Carlisle County home early on Friday. With more getting sick over the weekend, Carlisle County School District Superintendent Jay Simmons decided to cancel all classes on Monday and Tuesday at the elementary, middle and high school.

"We’re all on the same campus here, so we just wanted to make sure that as many students got well as possible," says Simmons.

It was recommendation by the Carlisle County Health Department, where Cinda Wilson is a nurse. She says the outcome could have been much worse if they didn’t cancel school.

"I would think you would see more sick children than we have right now," says Wilson.

While the kids are home sick, janitors and staff are at the school cleaning the place from top to bottom. They’re using a bleach solution that the health department recommended.

"It’s three-fourths cup of bleach to one gallon of water," says Wilson. "That is a good bleach-based solution to kill lots of viruses and illnesses."

School janitors are using the solution to clean everything in sight, including lockers, desks and school buses.

"Our main concern is the students health," says Simmons.

The Carlisle County Health Department is encouraging parents to make sure they’re kids are symptom free for at least 48 hours before going back to school.
