Mother copes with son’s death during the holidays
MAYFIELD, Ky —
It’s just days before Christmas, and Karima Bright says she’s not feeling the holiday spirit this year.
"For myself and other family members, it probably won’t be until after Christmas that they’ll have a Christmas," says Karima.
While most homes are covered in Christmas decorations, Karima’s is covered with pictures of her son, Jamel Al-Shubili.
"I miss everything about him," says Karima. "Everything."
Jamel was shot and killed on Sept. 9. He was just 18 years old.
Tearron Sherrill is charged with manslaughter in the death.
"The feeling a mother goes through, it’s unbearable," says Karima.
Jamel was buried in Mayfield right next to his best friend, Eli Mohney, who died just one year before Jamel.
"And that’s where he’s at, with his best friend," says Karima. "When I go to the grave site, that keeps me going."
It’s the same place Jamel would go after Eli’s death, but now it’s Karima’s spot.
