Tanker accident closes portion of I-57, prompts precautionary evacuations

UPDATE: Illinois State Police Trooper Joey Watson says the portions of Interstate 57 shut down because of the crash have been cleared and all lanes are reopen.


Portions of Interstate 57 are closed at this time after an accident near Marion, IL, involving a semi.

A spokesman for the Illinois State Police tells Local 6 that both north and south bound lanes are closed after a tanker containing propane flipped onto its side near mile marker 52.

Traffic is being diverted off of the interstate, and motorists are encouraged to seek alternate routes.

The tanker trailer is not reported as leaking.

Due to the presence of a hazardous material, the Marion Fire Department is coordinating evacuations of nearby residences as a precaution

The driver was transported via ambulance to a local hospital as a precaution.

Illinois State Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash at this time.
