Group helps repurpose old Christmas trees for fish habitat.

Christmas may be over, but you’ve probably still got that tree sitting in your house. Instead of getting rid of it, you can repurpose it for fish habitat.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is out picking up unsold trees from stores Monday. The trees will be used for underwater fish structures in Rend Lake, helping to create refuge for young fish, habitat for the area and even creating good fishing spots for area anglers. The trees will be dropped in mid-March.

There’s plenty of time to donate your old tree if you want to repurpose that pine. You can drop them off at the Rend Lake Boat ramps or parking lots at Sugar Creek parking lot, Dam West boat ramp, or Jackie Branch boat ramp until Jan. 16.

You can also recycle them in Mt. Vernon at Veterans Park, Optimist Park and Airport Park until January 8.
