Three charged with assault, wanton endangerment in Calloway County

Three people face charges in Calloway County in connection to a fight the sheriff’s department says involved gunshots.

Sheriff’s deputies in Calloway County say James Free, John Newberry and Jessica Long got into a fight Saturday off of Seth Lane in Murray, during which deputies say Free and Newberry brandished handguns. Two shots were fired. 

Free, Newberry and Long were arrested and jailed in the Calloway County Detention Center. 

Free was charged with first degree wanton endangerment, second degree assault, and alcohol intoxication. Newberry was charged with first degree wanton endangerment and second degree assault. Long was charged with first degree wanton endangerment and fourth degree assault. 

The sheriff’s office says its investigation into the incident is ongoing. The Calloway County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Murray Police Department and Murray-Calloway County EMS.
