Business raffling car to helping fund nonprofit

Many nonprofits around Illinois are continuing to scramble, hoping to find funding wherever they can. But the Night’s Shield in West Frankfort is finding help in the face of hardship.

Cindy McGee says the Night’s Shield is always busy. The rooms where abused and neglected kids stay rarely sit empty. She says they’re not hurting like other nonprofits around the state are, but they’re facing funding challenges, too.

"We are looking at a possible budget cut. It’s unsure where that lies for us right now," said McGee.

So when the Ike Family Dealerships in Marion, Illinois, wanted to help put on the Night’s Shield’s biggest fundraiser ever, McGee jumped on board.

"This will be by far the biggest fundraiser we’ve ever done. That can meet our funding for a full month," McGee said.

Buying a ticket for the Keys for Kids fundraiser doesn’t  just mean you’re supporting the Night’s Shield. It means you could leave in a new car.

"It’s a win-win for the shelter, because it’s a donation for the kids regardless. But, you also get a chance to win a new 2016 Honda Accord or a 2016 Volkswagen Passat," said Lori Sisulak, dealer principal at Volkswagen of Marion.

All the money raised goes to pay for activities, gifts, even food for the kids staying at the Night’s Shield. It’s why Jason Fisher bought tickets for his family.

"My family, we bought several. I’ve got one of my own and the reason we bought them is in my opinion there’s no better cause," said Fisher.

Fisher says he’s glad to be donating somewhere that directly helps kids. And if he wins a car in the meantime, that’s pretty great, too.

Only 1,000 of the Keys for Kids tickets will be sold, and 700 have been sold so far. One person will be chosen at random to take home either the 2016 Honda Accord or the 2016 Volkswagen Passat. The winner will be allowed to choose.

The drawing for the car will be held at 6 p.m. on Jan. 21 at Volkswagen of Marion.

Tickets are $100.
