US 51 Ohio River “Cairo” Bridge to re-open to traffic

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says they will re-open the US 51 Ohio River "Cairo" bridge to traffic around 7:00 a.m.

The bridge has been closed to traffic since December 31 when floodwaters covered the bridge approach levees at the Kentucky end of the span.

A check made Friday morning showed that water had dropped enough for the bridge to be re-opened.

Drivers are asked to use caution when driving along the bridge approach because floodwaters are still near the edge of the road.

US 51 south of Wickliffe, Kentucky, near the Ballard-Carlisle County line, is still closed. It may be a few days before that road can be re-opened.

With the bridge closed, drivers had to take a 80 mile detour via Interstate 24 though southern Illinois.
