Prisoner transport van driver dies from injuries in wreck with semi
The Illinois State Police says the driver of a prisoner transport van that collided with a tractor-trailer on Interstate 57 near Mt. Vernon Wednesday was fatally injured.
ISP says Marion County Sheriff’s Department Correctional Officer Adam Conrad and a 17-year-old male passenger in the van had to be extricated by the fire department. Conrad was taken by ambulance to a local hospital, where state police say the 22-year-old Sandoval man died. The 17 year old, who is from Salem, was taken to a local hospital and later transferred to a regional hospital.
The tractor trailer, driven by 46-year-old Donald Chambers of Springville, Indiana, was headed south on I-57 at milepost 84 and the van was headed north at mile post 84. ISP says the slick, partially snow covered roadway caused Conrad to lose control of the van, and it spun before crossing into southbound traffic and into the path of the semi.
ISP says the front of the tractor-trailer hit the passenger side of the van and both vehicles were heavily damaged. The tractor-trailer jackknifed before coming to rest on the right shoulder of the right lane. The van stopped in the left lane, ahead of the tractor-trailer. Chambers was uninjured in the crash.
Traffic was diverted off of I-57 south for about 6 hours before resuming normal flow.
